Making Space for Truth in My Work

This is a note I wrote last night as I watched people presenting their illustration and book ideas at a critique group. (Creators of all skill and professional levels. It was inspiring and humbling.)

For me, it’s a reminder as I create.

It’s easy to move pencil over paper, engaged in the act of drawing.

What I want to be mindful of in those times–whether a sketchbook in a coffee shop, or at my drawing table–is listening to my heart, my voice, the message in my work.

What have I been put here to say?

What impact do I want my work to make?

What are my core convictions?

I need to make space, time, to spend in the presence of those questions and let them guide me and inspire me.
